Youth today like the early, high energy work that made Metallica famous. Metallica remains one of the most polished bands touring today. But check out their domination of the 1980s. Here’s my top 5:
1. No Remorse
My favorite because it captures what I love about old Metallica: raw production, aggressive riffs, and reckless energy. The roughness makes it feel alive, especially when the speed picks up toward the end; reminiscent of Venom, a band that Metallica has cited as an inspiration.
2. Blackened
The main riff feels chaotic and precise at the same time, and I love how the shifting rhythms keep me on edge. The melodic opening makes the transition into the thrash sections hit even harder.
3. The Thing That Should Not Be
The slow, crushing riffs create an unsettling atmosphere that makes this one stand out. It feels like something enormous slowly approaching, and that sense of dread is what I love about it.
4. Spit Out the Bone
The lyrics imagine robots deciding humanity is an obstacle and eliminating it to create a supposedly perfect world. To me, it’s a warning about surrendering our humanity to technology, and the relentless music fits the brutality of that message.
5. Ride the Lightning.
I’ve worn Metallica’s Ride the Lightning t-shirt for year. The opening immediately grabs me, and the main riff has a sharp, driving energy. The lyrics add a sense of panic, while the extended guitar solo makes it even more memorable.
